Is Jurassic Park a Sunday Movie?

Forward: We are not wonderful parents.

Atticus loves dinosaurs. Most days I'm convinced he is part dinosaur (like when he did a cheetah run on his hands and feet down two halls at church yesterday before I could catch him). One day while browsing through some videos he found Jurassic Park... and about died! Please, please, please could he watch the 1990 action film. I told him no, quite scary for his Mama and definitely too scary for a preschooler. He promised over and over again that it would not be too scary for him. I still said no. And I think my little snugly boy then threatened to cut my head off:).  A few days later, after many more pleas from Atticus (and Jo who had quickly joined his ranks) Ryan and I sat down with the kids and watched "the Dinosaur movie." Don't be too worried- we had that remote in hand and used it liberally. Every time we'd fast-forward Jo or Tic would protest, "It's not scary! Look! I'm not scared!"

As I previously stated, we are not wonderful parents. I completely acknowledge this fact. Wonderful parents probably keep the T.V. off most of the time and would certainly not allow a 3 and 5 year old to see such a frightening film.

So yesterday, Sunday, our dwarfs started asking for "the Dinosaur movie" again. Absolutely not. In our family we do watch movies on Sunday but try to keep them pretty tame. Jo and Atticus could not give it up.
"Yes it IS a Sunday movie!" says Jo.
"No, it's really not." says me.
"Yes! I have two ideas of why it's a Sunday movie!"
"Okay, what are your ideas?"
"Because bad things happened to Jesus and bad things happen to the people in the movie. So Jesus would like it."
"Second idea?"
"Because Jesus a long long time ago made the dinosaurs!"
Both excellent points. Then Atticus loaded the argument even farther.
"And Jesus would like that the big dinosaur saves them at the end!" I wish I had a picture of his eyes as he pointed this fact out. Would Jesus indeed like that T-Rex eats the two raptors enabling Dr. Grant, Dr. Sattler, Alexis, and little Timmy to escape?

Honestly, the kids were close. Their reasoning was superb. And yet, as imperfect as we are at this parenting thing, we stuck to our guns. Curious about your opinion: Is Jurassic Park a Sunday movie?

    1. Sorry this was not a post by me, Amy just wrote it when I was signed in. Keep hoping though, someday it will happen. I actually tried a few months ago, but couldn't figure out how to post an audio file.

  2. Well, if you really think about it Jurassic Park is a movie that shows that men should NOT play God, and that bad things happen when they try...which makes it in a way about God, which then makes it a Sunday movie. Right?

  4. This is the time I'm glad I'm "old" and don't have to make these big decisions! Grandpa and I are laughing. Family togetherness on Sunday counts.
